Miles Davis Sextet, live from the Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, CA 25th September 1981

This concert was one of Miles Davis’ first after more than half a decade in retirement. His comeback LP, The Man With The Horn (1981) had been released to mixed reviews earlier in the year. This is the loosest music of the comeback years. Loose in a good way, it swings. Miles employed guitarist Mike Stern for his ability to deliver fireworks but also for his “fat time”; Sophisticated bassist Marcus Miller provides funk and much more; Miles veteran Al Foster holds down the grooves and young sax player Bill Evans fearlessly treads in the footsteps of Rollins, Coltrane and Wayne Shorter. The set lists for this tour included several tracks from The Man With The Horn LP, the nursery rhyme-like “Jean Pierre” and, unexpectedly, “My Man’s Gone Now” from Porgy and Bess.

Performed at the Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles on September 25th 1981 and broadcast by KRQK-FM radio
