In addition to featuring Curtis Fuller shortly after the trombonist arrived in New York from his native Detroit, and pianist Hampton Hawes on a rare visit to the East Coast (and a rare performance outside his preferred trio setting), this fascinating album allows for comparison and contrast between two of the pioneering jazz French horn soloists--Julius Watkins, with his buttery sound, and the harder-hitting David Amram--as well as Sahib Shihab working exclusively on the alto sax. The compositions by Amram, producer Teddy Charles (who spells Hawes at the piano on one track) and Torie Zito are also distinct from the typical blowing tunes of the era, and make good use of the unusual front line. Of particular note are Zito's moody "Adrift"; "Lyriste," which was also recorded by the Prestige Jazz Quartet (OJCCD-1937-2); and the Watkins/Amram conversation on that highlights the differences in their styles so effectively on "Five Spot."
