Originally released on Audio Fidelity in 1956, this 12 track album outlinesan interesting phenomenon which developed in Trinidad during the lastyears of British colonization. Prevented from using skin drums - banned bythe British in an attempt to suppress African tribal customs - Trinidadiansbegan using steel tubes and sticks to create a new form of urban soundwhich, like the musical expression of many other long colonized countries, brought together protest and entertainment. Many of the tunes reinterpreted here are of African andSpanish heritage, although French Creole and Indian influences - East Indians relocated here by theshortage of slaves after the 1833 abolition - ) are also present, giving the listener the chance to enjoy anentirely unique piece of street art and history.Track listing: Side A: 1.
