Gentle Giant was a showcase for the talents of three multi-instrumentalists, the brothers Ray, Derek and Philip Schulman. Together with guitarist Kerry Minnear and drummer Malcolm Mortimore, the group developed a style as advanced as contemporaries Yes and Genesis.
Hailed as one of the great concept albums, 'Three Friends' has achieved cult status since it was first released in 1972. The songs tell the story of three friends who lead very different lives after leaving school. One becomes a labourer, the other an artist and the third a successful businessman. It's a simple idea but the music is often complex and sophisticated.
The album is presented as a 'rock opera' with a prologue and various themes that develop the story and depict the fate and character of each 'friend'. Vocals, keyboards and guitars blend in clever arrangements that will delight all discerning fans of classic progressive rock.
