This second volume of previously unavailable interviews from the Doors Archives features a never-before-released interview that was conducted on October 13, 1970 on the patio of The Doors' West Hollywood office by reporter Salli Stevenson for Circus Magazine (which, along with Rolling Stone and Creem, was one of the first outlets for rock journalism). The near-hour long conversation has been painstakingly restored and conveniently indexed into 41 separate questions and answers. It offers remarkable insight into Jim Morrison's viewpoints and visions about his past, present, and future. The end of the 1960s was a volatile time, both for America and for popular music, and Morrison provided the perfect prism through which to view the changes sweeping society. The controversy surrounding the charismatic Doors vocalist is well in evidence in this Circus interview -- which was held in the wake of Jim's notorious Miami bust. In fact, the Lizard King's legal travails considerably complicated the situation. Interviews Stevenson had set up through Elektra Records had to be cancelled twice before he and Morrison arrived at ground rules that would permit the two to speak on the record. In the end they agreed to allow Jim to edit the transcripts of the interview so as not to give the Florida court ammunition it could use against him. And while this interview (supplemented on this CD by new liner notes by Salli Stevenson) might have given little to prosecutors, for Doors fans it is a goldmine.Bright Midnight ArchivesThis is the real thing, as The Doors played it, without intrusive overdubs or fixes. While technical glitches remain, and the tape sound is sometimes primitive, the performance quality and historical significance make Bright Midnight Archives releases essential in any Doors collection.
