Originating from Buffalo, New York, the band initially emerged in 1967 as The Mellow Brick Road. The founding members included vocalists Phil and Jerry Hudson, bassist Joe Hesse, keyboardist Jim Hesse, guitarist Ralph Parker, and drummer Nick DiStefano. They made their debut with a single, "Don't Put All Your Eggs In One Basket," under the United Artists label.
Transitioning into The Road, the group gained traction with their hit "She's Not There," released through Kama Sutra. This single exceeded 200,000 copies in sales, ranking at #88 on Cashbox charts in Canada and even making an appearance on the charts in Greece.
