180g LP Shirley Collins' contribution to British folk music can not be overstated. She is
responsible for bringing traditional English music back into the mainstream and
her recordings and archival work (Collins always cited her sources) has saved many
beautiful songs, often passed down only through oral tradition, from vanishing into
obscurity. What Alan Lomax did for the American South (Collins actually
accompanied Lomax on a year-long American archiving tour), Collins did for the
English countryside, only Collins brought the music into the 'now' of the 1960s and
70s, using her own unique voice and modern electric instrumentation. 1971's No
Roses is both a seminal and star-studded album in this vein of traditional electrified
English folk music. Featuring (then-husband) Ashley Hutchings, Richard Thompson
and Simon Nicol of Fairport Convention fame.
