Dark experimental female–fronted acid folk
Caira Paravel belongs to a rare and elite class of female voices in psychedelic folk. Paravel’s debut "Mirror Mirror" is not singer–songwriter drivel masquerading as "acid" folk – it is sparse, haunting, introspective, avant–garde folk supreme. Paravel’s voice is unaffected and honest, comfortably inhabiting a space shared by the likes of Linda Perhacs, Shirley Collins, Vashti Bunyan, Maddy Prior and Licorice McKechnie. Mirror Mirror was produced by San Francisco musician/producer Walker Phillips, who recorded and mixed the album to analog tape, played most of the instruments and wrote two of the songs (Mirror Mirror, Lovebird). The musical textures wander between medieval, musique concrète, gospel & psychedelic pop – maintaining a melancholy sweetness throughout. The thoughtful arrangements feature acoustic guitars, harpsichord, Mellotron, sitar, flute, bells, Moog synthesizer and more. Paravel lives in San Francisco where she is also a writer and painter.
